Medway Dragons U7s @ The Mighty Quins Festival 26.06.10

14 Magnificent U7s, aged almost 4 to 7 years, produced lifetime best performances when it mattered most: on their world stage @ The Warburtons Mighty Quins Festival held at The Twickenham Stoop, before their world-wide audience of thousands. When it mattered most, the next generation of Rugby League superstars showed commitment, courage, skill, effort but above all a sense fun. They were the epitome of what sport should be, unlike those soccer playing big boys.

Fielding two teams, the slightly experienced Reds and the even less experienced Golds, they took on the might of Sussex Merlins and Brentwood Elvers, both of whom were reliant on some mercenaries from Elmbridge and Croydon to make up their numbers and thereby qualify to play. More than just a moral victory to the Dragons: at this age it should be about participation and fun, and not totally focussed on winning.

The Reds first conquered the Elvers, then their Gold brothers (a bit too ruthlessly!) before succumbing to the Merlins. Not so much short of a couple of players, as a couple of short players (by virtue of their age) they tagged and scored like professionals. This season’s runners-up, next season’s winners, stand tall and proud Crawford Middlemiss, Harry Daniels, Kian Thornhill, Lewis Hitchens, Robin Barnett, Solomon Murdoch-North and Thomas Barnett.

The Golds started very, very slowly against the favourites and eventual winners, the Merlins. They improved against their Red brothers before sparking into life against the Elvers. They may have lost all three, but with each match, each minute on the pitch, those that saw them, witnessed toddlers blossom into boys. Those that hadn’t run or shown any inclination to do so all season long, raced through to score a try – Ben Durham. Those whose only contact with tags all season had been to try and velcro them to a coach’s head, tagged as if they’d tagged all their lives – Samuel Morris. And those that had spent the season being little pains (but loveable) carried on enjoying themselves, by appearing from nowhere to kick the ball away just as their teammate was about to play-the-ball – can’t be named for legal reasons. So congratulations to Austin Youngs, Rory Youngs (probably the youngest player ever to grace the Stoop pitch in a competitive match), Ben Durham, Finley Mathe, Jacob Morris, Samuel Morris and Sebastian Brooks.

Everyone who saw them will remember them and the day will be forever etched in their memories. It was a Saturday, 5th June 2010: a day or two after the anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death; a day after Friday; the day before Stevie Wonder took to the stage at Glasto; the day before the soccer playing big boys succumbed to the Germans; the day that those in the Magnificent 7s stepped up to the plate and started on their journey to Rugby League superstardom.
