DRAGONS U9s @ The Warburton’s Mighty Quins Festival – 22nd May 2010

An early start for the Mighty Dragon Under 9’s at Twickenham Stoop for the Warburton’s Mighty Quins Festival. Two Pools had been created for the U9’s age group, and the Dragons had drawn been drawn in the stronger of them.
The group stage kicked off with Medway playing back to back games against. First against their old rivals, Brentwood, and then against an Elmbridge team boasting 8 new players since our last encounter two weeks ago. The Dragons needed to be out of their blocks early, but to heavy defeats left their coaches wondering if they had brought the same team who had been progressing so steadily over the last few months. But that thought was soon brushed aside when, after a short break, the U9’s took to the field again to face Brentwood for the second time. Thumping team and individual tackles, great solo runs, offloads and some neat sidestepping, gave the Dragons a 16-12 going into the last minute. Solid tackling again though, saw what we thought was a knock-on, but held had already been called, and Brentwood managed to score to draw the match at 16 All. Our last group match was against Elmbridge, who had run in 7 tries against us earlier. But despite not managing to register a score of their own, the dragons managed to restrict Elmbridge to just two scores.
So with lessons learned, the under 9’s faced Elmbridge’s other team for the 3rd placed play-off, a match the Dragons were clearly determined to win. The fact that This Elmbridge team boasted the biggest U9 player in the tournament, that didn’t phase the Dragons, and Brad ‘the Bruiser’ Jenkins set to work on him straight away. With Elmbridge knocking on, ‘Cool-hands’ Bailey Blyth, flicked the ball out to the on-rushing Ollie ‘Fearless’ Faux, who drove downfield 20 metres before being tackled, great support however from Daniel ‘Dynamite’ Clark, allowed him to offload, Clark making a further 10 metres. Ronnie ‘Rocket’ Philips, and Tom ‘Terminator’ Grange, took the ball to the 5, before Faux managed to touch down in the corner. The Eagles sent in their big man, , but the Dragons, lead by Jenkins example started to push Elmbridge back, with defensive charges from Cameron ‘Kamikaze’ Anderson, Louis ‘Hitman’ Crompton, and new boy Karl ‘the Assassin’ Adams.
The Dragons confidence was growing, and as Dan ‘Man of Steel’ took over as dummy half, mazy runs from Alfie ‘Quick feet’ Leggett, Racing’ Rhys Price set-up Faux for another score. The Eagles managed to pull one back, after a high tackle call against the Dragons, but they were not going to be deterred. The two teams exchanged tries over the next couple of sets, and with a couple of minutes remaining the score was 16-8 to the Dragons. Elmbridge clearly didn’t want to lose this one, and some determined running enabled them to pull one back to 16-12. A knock on Medway’s next drive, gave Elmbridge an opportunity to draw level, and on fifth tackle they gave the ball to ‘Landslide’ Lennon, who tried to charge his way over from a metre out. He was met by three very determined Dragons, who became for then five Dragons, pushing him back to the 5 metre line. With the ball turned over, Philips, Adams and Anderson drove the ball to half-way, where Faux managed to round the defence to score the final try of the match, 20-12.
A fitting way for the Mighty U9’s to complete their last tournament of the season. A tremendous team effort that grew to a crescendo, from the third match to their last. With the level these players have reached in such a short time, I have no doubt that next time they will be returning from the Quins with Gold.

Well Done Mighty U9’s !!!
