Now that is definitely the way to put an end to a cracking season! After the disappointment of losing to Brentwood Elvers in the Grand Final, the Dragons U13 team (plus an U12 and two U14s) took to the road in the first ever Dragons tour match.
A coach load of snappy dressers (Dragons red all round) took to the high road for the trip to Northampton. The Knights are no mugs, with a semi-final match next weekend in the Eastern U14 League, a gentle walkthrough against an Under 13 team was probably just the warm up they were looking for.
After five minutes that was just how it looked as the Knights brought their fast paced winger into the game to put down behind the Dragons line. Eight-nil down and it was looking like a daunting prospect.
However, the Dragons completed an excellent set close to the Knights line and then forced a mistake from the Knights scrum, giving Richard Harris the opportunity to burst through the defence and score for the first of two that he would bag for the day.
That opened the flood gates, and despite several more tries from the Knights attacking winger, the Dragons played their socks off across the whole team. As time edged towards the end of the first half, Callum Simmons scored the first of his brace and the Dragons met the whistle edging ahead 24-20.
The second half saw a further three tries from the Dragons courtesy of a pair from Charlie Faux and one from Callum Daulby. Added to this were a further eight points from the boot of Connor O’Grady and two from Richard Harris, with the Knights unable to penetrate the Dragons defence once in the whole of the second thirty.
A truly great performance from the lads on a great pitch against some very good opposition; congratulations all round to those who took part and a very special mention to the other lads who could not make the trip through injury.
A big Dragons ‘Thanks’ goes to the Knights who so graciously hosted us for the day and laid on a spread for us after the game. We very much look forward to a return match as a pre-season warm-up for us both next year.
So, the end of the U13 season: sixteen games, fourteen wins and two losses. A really great set of stats and a tribute to the effort that all of the boys put in throughout the season. Well done, and see you back soon for midweek fitness training!
